General FAQs

Since 2023, Gaza’s entire Higher Education system has been devastated – all universities severely damaged or destroyed, academics and students killed, and thousands displaced. The extent of the destruction has led United Nations specialists to express grave concern that this pattern of attacks indicates an attempt at the ‘systematic destruction of the Palestinian education system’ (UN, 2024), also referred to as ‘scholasticide’. As opposed to the situation in other conflict zones, this scholasticide has been occurring across historic Palestine for decades, under various guises (Wind, 2024), but has recently intensified in Gaza as part of the current genocide.

It is against this backdrop that we are launching 80 PLUS to attempt to meet some of the urgent needs for Palestinian students in Gaza to continue their higher education which will enable them to contribute to rebuilding education in Gaza. At the same time, we recognise the equally urgent need to support universities in Gaza to continue to operate in whichever way they can; for this reason, we have also built into our model a mechanism for supporting students currently studying at their home universities in Gaza.

Absolutely! We welcome donations of any amount. While £30/month is our suggested amount, any amount you can afford can make a real difference when combined with other donors.

Yes, we greatly appreciate larger donations! You can set up monthly donations of any amount above £30. Larger contributions help us achieve our targets.

Certainly! One-time donations are very welcome and can be made at any amount. While monthly donations help us plan better, one-off contributions are perfect for special occasions, corporate giving, or when you want to support a specific campaign.

Yes, absolutely. Setting up a standing order is a simple and reliable way to support 80 PLUS with a monthly donation of any amount.

To set up a standing order (UK banks) please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your bank account: This can be through your mobile banking app or online banking website.

  2. Choose “Standing Orders” or “Payments”: Look for an option called Standing Orders, Regular Payments, or Scheduled Payments.

  3. Add 80 PLUS as a new payee: Enter the bank details provided: (account name: 80 PLUS Ltd., sort code: 82-12-08, and account number: 50257186).

  4. Choose the amount and frequency

    • Select monthly

    • Enter any amount you wish (there is no minimum)

  5. Set the start date: You can choose to start immediately or on a future date.

  6. Add a reference (optional but helpful): Use the name of the city or university fund you wish to support.

  7. Confirm and save: Your bank will handle the payments automatically each month.

Once set up, you remain in full control and can change or cancel the standing order at any time through your bank.

If you need help or prefer another way to give, please contact us and we’ll be happy to assist.

We are committed to using every donation carefully, responsibly, and transparently. If a local fundraising group does not reach the full amount needed to fund a scholarship within the planned timeframe, we may take one or more of the following approaches, in consultation with our city or university committees and Board of Directors:

  • Pooling funds across cities or universities to fully fund at least one scholarship.

  • Carrying funds forward to the following year to allow additional time to reach the full target.

  • Redirecting surplus or partial funds to support students studying in Gaza, such as helping with university fees, certificate release, or essential language test costs.

In all cases, decisions are guided by our mission to protect access to education, ensure fairness, and maximise impact. Full details of our financial policies and fund allocation will always be shared transparently on our website.

Yes, we are officially registered as a Limited Company by Guarantee, which is non-profit as any profits are reinvested into the organisation’s purpose instead of being paid to its owners, who run the company entirely in a voluntary capacity. Our registration number is 16771037. Please read further about our mission, values, and objectives in the About Us page.

Yes, where possible. We aim to allocate a proportion of the funds we raise to support students who are continuing their studies in Gaza by covering essential university fees. In many cases, an amount of around £1,000 can cover one year of tuition for a Gaza-based student at their home university. This support complements our UK scholarship programme and helps protect access to education at all levels.

For security and transparency reasons, we primarily accept online payments through our secure donation platform. However, for larger donations or special circumstances, please contact us directly to discuss alternative payment arrangements.

80 PLUS is run entirely by volunteers. We have minimum overheads, e.g., for costs that are unavoidable such as transaction fees payable to third parties. Our commitment is to ensure we use your donations in a way that helps as many students as possible.

Yes! You can choose to support specific city or university campaign. We provide detailed information about each campaign so you can make an informed choice.

We use a clear, fair, and structured selection process. First, students will apply through our online application system (which will go live in due course), where they submit their personal details, academic records, and supporting documents. Students are then shortlisted and invited to an interview.

Students are selected by volunteer committees at each university based on financial need, academic standing, and potential impact. We prioritise students who demonstrate both genuine financial hardship and strong commitment to their studies. Applications and interviews are assessed using robust, standardised selection criteria to make sure decisions are consistent, transparent, and focused on those who are most likely to benefit and give back to their communities.

Yes, you can cancel or modify your monthly donation at any time through your donor account or by contacting us. We understand circumstances change and appreciate any support you can provide.

We provide regular updates including six-monthly reports showing how funds are used, student progress updates, and success stories. You’ll receive transparent reporting on the impact of your contribution.

City or university committees offer guidance, mentorship, social support, and help the student settle into academic and community life.

We currently fund one-year full-time taught master’s degrees.

Yes. You can join a university committee, help with fundraising, offer mentorship, or support admin and outreach work. Find out more in the Get Involved page.

We work directly with UK universities, maintain strict financial controls, and publish annual reports on our impact and spending.

Get in touch through our “Get Involved” page. We’ll meet you, help you form a committee (if none exists in your location), start fundraising, and support you to connect with your university community.

That’s completely okay – we want you to feel confident and informed. You can contact us anytime through our website, by email, or at events, and we’ll happily explain how the model works, how funds are used, and how students are supported. There are no “silly questions” – your trust and understanding matter to us.
